Tulsa, Von Schnon, Piggie

celebrating 918 day

Light newsy today, here’s the Joebly agenda:

  • McNellie’s Group Spotlight

  • The bumblebee legend continues

  • Arkansas vs. Auburn (yikes)

  • Selling myself to those who could use me (what???)

September 18th is a day of celebration in Tulsa, who boasts the 918 area code.

In honor of said celebration, I want to spotlight some of the Tulsa food scenes, primarily McNellie’s group, but that’s just because they’re the best in class.

  1. McNellie’s Pub

Brilliant burgers (yummy patty melt), great beer selection - I think it’s 60 on tap, good mix of big time guys + local brews.

The tastiest of sweet potato fries, which I am BIG on.

And a little (actually quite large, but I prefer little as an adjective because it’s more endearing) outdoor patio.

  1. Dilly Diner

    dilly dilly

You’ve heard me talk about their chicken & waffles. It’s ALL good though.

They also have a massive Cinnamon Roll called “THE JED”

  1. Bramble Breakfast & Bar

Oh me oh my, what a sweet little breakfast/brunch/lunch spot.

I’ll recommend the bramwich bowl - basically a perfect breakfast burrito bowl ON TOP of a house made biscuit, covered in gravy - WOW.

  1. Elgin Park

This is where you want to catch “the big game” - right across from the Tulsa Drillers Baseball Diamond (ONEOK Field), you’ll find yourself some great pizza, great wings, great beer.

Perfect for a big group.

  1. Yokozuna

Noodles. Sushi. Cocktails. Happiness.

At least that’s what they say - and they DELIVER.

So yummy. Drinks tasty too. Had my first Sake there my graduation weekend - my grandma wasn’t a huge fan.

BONUS #6 - FASSLER HALL

Grab yourself a pint and a good ole German dog.

Perfect for a fall weather outdoor hang.

The classic “we always go to fasslers, we should try something different” always gets tossed around - doesn’t matter, we’ll be there.

It’s important to note that 5/6 of these restaurants are a part of Tulsa’s own McNellie’s Group, and you can tell I’m a SUCKER for what they’re doing

The Legend of the Bumblebee Continues

Dr. Henry Von Schnon Schninkle Schnortz (certified bumblebee hater) has a backstory.

Growing up in Germany, home to nearly 600 different species of bees, Von Schnon grew accustomed to the quiet buzz of the bombas around his neighborhood.

Von Schnon helped his mother grow their garden, and he tended to their flower beds that hugged tightly to their front porch.

It was that unfortunate summer of 1947, the coldest in Germany's history, that changed Von Schnon's life.

During the great bumblebee migration of 1947, the bees took with them the Von Schnon dream: a family-owned flower business.

As the Von Schnon family dream fell ill, so too did Henry's mother.

All at once, Henry's life was uprooted.

(not the real von schnon - obviously)

The 16 year old, whose zeal for life had been replaced by malice toward the bees, charted a new path forward.

A path to ruin the bumblebee's name.

He made it his life's mission to prove to the world that the world would be better off without the bees.

That the reliance upon bees for flourishing and for growth was reckless and irresponsible.

He saw the relationship between human and bee as parasitic rather than symbiotic.

He devoted the next decade of his life to studying insects and their purpose only to discredit the need for the bumblebee.

His pent up anger and sadness led to a life of striving toward an unworthy purpose, to no avail.

What can we learn from Von Schnon’s mistakes?

Make sure we identify places of pain from our past, that we may deal with them early in order to heal and progress.

Von Schnon wasn’t so lucky.

Might we forgive, and might we heal, allowing us to live the life we were called to live.

More to come on Von Schnon as well as the life of Sir Reginald Bomba, our fearless bumblebee friend.

Woo piggies versus War Eagles

woo piggie

Arkansas versus Auburn if you weren’t sure.

I’ll keep this short and sweet.

Both teams are probably a little bit bad, but could have a little bit of good in them.

I think the Arkansas loss against Oklahoma State was a more impressive showing that Auburns loss to Cal IN AUBURN.

Now why am I passionate about this game?

My wife, whom I so dearly love, is an Auburn grad and devout Auburn football fan.

I grew up in Arkansas, and though I love my alma mater (reign cane), I will always love the hogs.

This will be yet another test of our relationship. Because I’m less competitive than my wife, it will be better for our marriage (short term) if Auburn wins.

I’m focused on long-term marital success, which means an Arkansas win, accompanied by much relational adversity, will do us splendidly.

We shall overcome - woo pig!

I made myself available to a CEO who wanted a blog post written for his organization.

Most of the blogs he’s posted over the last year or so were a few hundred words long, nothing crazy, so I said, “hey, I could probably do it”

So he’s paying me a reasonable fare (one million dollars) to write up a blog post for him and his startup.

Consider me available to do such things given that it won’t cost me an arm or a leg or too much time (I have a real job, people).

LinkedIn posts, newsletter segments, blogs, tweets, you name it.

Look, I’m not a REAL writer, but I can write, and I enjoy doing it before and after hours.

Might as well do it for others, you know.

ALAS/Call to Action!

Please respond to this email letting me know how you enjoyed this newsletter.

What would you like to see in the next one?

Was the Von Schnon story too much? Just enough?

Sorry about the picture of the german boy from 1912, it seemed fitting for young von schnon.

Hopefully the food pics made up for it.

Cheers!
